Andy's Ambles - February

OK working our way from the top. the top line contaings the name of the place that the route is based around, the second line has a OS map number (Ex = Explorer (orange 1:25000)), the difficulty rating is based on the sections (Beavers = Easy; Explorers = Hard). On the third line is the start and finish co-ordinants on the OS map. The time is a rough estimate on how long the route should take at about 3-4km/hr. The following lines cover the route descriptions and also a map of the area that the route takes. In some cases we may include a link to other documents on the web like the OS website.

Summary: The second walk of the series takes place right on our own door step. The area around Brookwood and Pirbright offers some fantastic walking and these two routes (red and blue) offer a chance to explore some of the delights of the area. Starting in Brookwood there is a chance to explore the Brookwood Cemetary and the War graves there. Pirbright church offers the chance to find Stanleys grave.

Some of the woodland area although they cn be a bit muddy and wet allow for a good magnitude of walks and if required are great for learning some navigation skills.

As for the walking its self it is fairly easy without too many hills in fact I would go as far as saying that they are more like undulations than hills.

Getting there: Not too far to go to get to this one, most of you should be able to walk to the start from home or the hall as the start is the station.

The Route: Starting at the Station proceed into the car park and into the Cemetary. In the cemetary turn right and follow the footpath whilst hugging (as best you can) the railway line. This will bring you out on the Pirbright side of the "tunnel" at the West end of Brookwood.

At the traffic lights cross the road and follow the footpath into the woodland the runs behind the first block of housing towards the School. when you reach School Lane cross straight over and continue SW. This footpath brings you out next to Pirbright Church. Take a short time to explore the Cemetary where you will find teh grave of Sir Henry Morton Stanley.

After this the footpath follows the one way street for a while follow this and just after you pass the house flow the path to your left. This path will take you to Pirbright Lodge. From here you have a choice of taking a couple of routes marked blue and red on the map below. Im going to guide you along the red route as this is the longer of the two but you can choose which one to take and can change course at any time.

From what resembles at times a car park proceed westerly towards the "long house". At these buildings take a left turn and continue up the hill and down the other side where the path will take you to your left. At the intersection of the two paths turn right and carry on down the hil lto the stream. Following the stream to the right will bring you out at stream house (this section is often wet and muddy). Go round the house to the right and then kink left. This will take you past the very picturesque lake, make sure that you stay to the near side of the lake although you can walk round the far side also. From herefollow the path to the main Pirbright to Aldershot road and cross it on the west side of henley Works which you can now walk round on the footpath turning back towards Pirbright.

From here it is a fairly straight walk towards the Cobbethill Masts that are just the other side of the road to Normandy. Skirt the edge of the golf course passing the masts on your left. You will pass directly past one very small lake and there will be two larger ones below you on the right. Along this section the path splits and you want to go to the left turning to a more Northerly direction across Stanford Common. This will bring you out onto Ash Road, turning left will tak you to the Royal Oak where you can get some refreshments for all the family. This route takes you to the right following the road past the two research labs and into Bullswater Common that is on the left about half a mile up the road.

pass through Bullswater Common, across the road into Pirbright Common and proceed North East before swinging North West back towards Pirbright. Once you get into Pirbright you can again stop at either of the Pubs or proceed straight back to Brookwood by passing through the Cemetary and the war graves that are there.
